Day 61: San Diego – Old town

Posted: May 11, 2014 in America: Miami to San Francisco

I’ve made it to the Pacific coast!

4 shot macciato and off I go sightseeing – Starbucks coffee was slightly sour this morning so I had to add a small amount of sugar.

Today’s agenda includes visits to:

Mission and Pacific Beach, Balboa Park, Gas Lamp quarter and Hotel del Coronado

First stop Old Town, established in the 1820’s and granted status of a ‘pueblo’, or chartered town in 1834. When California was admitted to the United States in 1850, San Diego was made the county seat of San Diego County. When a new settlement ‘Alonzo Horton’ grew up nearer the coast businesses and investors quickly relocated. In 1871, government records were moved from Old Town to a new county courthouse in New Town which permanently overshadowed its predecessor from then on.
